“Fucking Mustard Gas”

Fucking Mustard GasOk, so bare with me, I promise I’m not some whacked out drug addict. This drawing was done whilst I was on the train home from Sydney back to Newcastle. Although it was a busy time of day, there were very few people in the carriage. It didn’t take me long to realise why. There was a man sitting by himself, perhaps in his 50s talking to himself quite loudly. Based on the stories he’d told aloud, he was quite obviously a heavy drug user but wished to rid himself of the dependance. Not only that, but he had some passionate opinions about a range of issues facing Australia and the world. I began to write down some of his quotes, although at times poorly articulated he raised some powerful points. In response I’ve decided to do a series of simple works, based on the ramblings of this troubled man.

“Fucking Mustard Gas! If you can’t breath in the air you’re as good as fucking dead”

Man on the Train

For a bit of context, this rambling came about when he mentioned the ongoing war in Syria. As most people know, the Syrian regime as been found to use chemical weapons on its own citizens. Now countries like the USA and France are on the verge of launching military strikes against the Assad regime. This is a delicate time in world foreign affairs and although the words of this man may be simple, they highlight the brutal reality of war and the use of chemical weapons. Although this man’s life is far removed from the wars in the middle east, his attitude and conviction is a microcosm for the broader global concern of the escalating violence.
